madam fussypants
January 16th, 2010 by Matushka DanielleSleep training has not been going particularly well. We’ve been sabotaged by Martha getting constipated. Everything I’ve read says that babies who are exclusively breastfed are rarely constipated. Unfortunately Martha seems to be one of those rare babies.
The first time it happened was right before Western Christmas. She suddenly went for several days without a dirty diaper and she started getting smelly. I called the pediatrician who advised rectal stimulation and karo syrup in her bottle. That worked. But then she still didn’t go back to her pattern of having a regular daily dirty diaper, so I consulted the pediatrician again who said that breastfed babies are rarely constipated and at this age her habits are probably changing, so let her go for a week and if she seems fine, she probably is and if I was worried about it, try giving her an ounce of prune juice with an ounce of water. That also worked. But she *still* didn’t go back to her regular habits and after almost a week of a very gassy fussy miserable sleepless baby, I resorted to rectal stimulation and prune juice. And we’ve decided to just keep her on prune juice every other day to keep her regular.
But we’re also beginning to wonder if maybe she’s starting to teethe because she was still pretty fussy yesterday and again today despite a good night’s sleep. Or maybe she just doesn’t like sleeping in her pack&play yet. Or maybe she’s just mad about growing up.
One of the good things about being fussy was that she learned how to roll over. I put her on the boppy to distract her and she was mad about it so she started flailing around and flipped herself over. I flipped her back and she did it again. I put her on the floor and she did it one more time before I stopped being delighted at her new trick, and picked her up to rescue her from being mad.

Yay, Martha, on rolling over!
Teething caused all manner of symptoms: constipation, gas, fever, sleeplessness, and general all-the-time fussiness in my babes. Hope she feels better soon!

I’m sorry that Peepers is mad, but prune juice was a savior for us. So were warm baths and taking her temp (rectal stimulation). None of us liked it, but it cut back on the constipation. Of course, ours was more explainable because we were giving her rice-cereal in her bottle by that time to help with the acid reflux. Sending good thoughts!
